IBM Consulting has expanded its relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help more mutual clients derive value from generative artificial intelligence.

The investment will see the two companies develop and deliver joint solutions and services in the generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) domain, a technology that according to McKinsey has the potential to add up to $4.4 trillion in economic value annually in the coming years.

IBM Consulting and AWS will also team up to develop specific use cases for generative AI, and deepen their technological integration across key systems such as IBM’s watsonx.data platform and the AWS cloud.

Generative AI is a technology that powers humanlike bots such as ChatGPT. These bots use deep-learning models and smart algorithms to generate high-quality text, images, and other content based on inputted prompts. The field has seen a major breakthrough with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT late 2022.

“Enterprise clients are looking for expert help to build a strategy and develop generative AI use cases that can drive business value and transformation – while mitigating risks,” said Manish Goyal, a senior partner at IBM Consulting.

“Paired with IBM’s artificial intelligence heritage and deep expertise in business transformation on AWS, our joint suite of solutions will help our mutual clients to scale generative AI applications rapidly and responsibly on their platform of choice.”

As part of the IBM Consulting’s investment, the consultancy said it has committed to training an additional 10,000 consultants (of its 160,000-strong total workforce) on AWS’s array of generative AI services by the end of 2024.

Chris Niederman, a managing director at AWS, commented: “Our customers are increasingly looking for the technical support and AI expertise they need to build and implement a generative AI strategy that drives business value from their entire cloud value chain. We are excited to be working with IBM Consulting to include embedded generative AI capabilities that assist our mutual customers scale their applications.”

IBM Consulting and AWS have been working together for over a decade, helping clients across a range of industries strategise and deliver their digital transformation and technology agenda. With over 22,000 AWS certifications globally, IBM is one of AWS’ top tier partners.
