Fresh fruit player IG International has roped in consultants from PwC to support the company with professionalising its environment, social and governance (ESG) efforts.

Founded over 50 years ago, IG International is one of India’s largest importers of fresh fruit. With facilities and wholesale outlets across in cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Amravati, and Theog, IG International supplies millions of Indians with fresh fruits from around the world.

Meanwhile, IG International also exports Indian produce – mainly potatoes and grapes – to countries across the globe.

As part of its ambition to become a leader in ESG in the agri-food sector, IG International is working on a set of ESG-related improvement initiatives. Among the key pillars are: improving its environmental footprint, growing its ‘giving back’ to community, adding more diversity to its supply chain, and greening its operations.

On the latter ambition, IG International is looking to make a 70 per cent transition to renewable energy by 2027 with a 25 per cent reduction in energy consumption by 2025.

To support the development of its ESG agenda, the Mumbai-headquartered group has brought in experts from PwC to review its ESG program and provide recommendations on areas of improvement.

Tarun Arora, Director of Finance and Operations at IG International, said, “With PwC being leaders in consulting and the ESG domain, this association to capacitate and invigorate our ESG program further reiterates our relentless commitment towards sustainable obligations, environmental modality, and practising omni-corporeal governance.”

Among the key processes PwC will explore are IG International’s supply chain footprint, the use of materials, and steps taken for its planned energy transition. PwC’s team will also look at the governance of the ESG portfolio.

Commenting on the project, Sambitosh Mohapatra, Leader of PwC’s ESG and Energy Utilities & Resources practices in India, “There is a need for more companies in the agri-business domain to take ESG initiative seriously and be part of the ESG journey which can help them find the right solutions on the path towards sustainability.”

“Our capabilities underpin the conscious operability of our clients by following the ESG frameworks in accordance with standard industry practices and set them in motion to achieve the SDGs seamlessly.”
