Global consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal has stepped up its ambitions in Australia with the opening of new and larger offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, as the firm works towards a bold plan to expand its position in the “strategically important” Australian market.
With over 6,500 consultants and staff worldwide, Alvarez & Marsal’s is one of the world’s leading management consulting firms. But with a relatively small on the ground presence in the world’s fifth consulting market in size – the potential for growth in Australia is apparent.
This is where the firm’s new South East Asia and Australia growth plan comes in. Unveiled in the summer, the plan aims to build a regional practice that mirrors the firm’s presence in powerhouse markets such as the US, UK and Europe.
“Australia is a key Asia Pacific market for our clients around the globe and represents an exciting growth chapter for the firm,” said Alvarez & Marsal’s co-founder Bryan Marsal.
Utsav Garg, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s South East Asia and Australia business unit, added that the firm’s expansion drive also comes “in response to growing demand for our services from both corporates and private equity groups.”
Most known for its restructuring expertise (Alvarez & Marsal was propelled to global fame when it was appointed the lead financial advisor to the administration and wind-up of Lehman Brothers – still the world’s largest restructuring case in history), the US-headquartered consultancy also helps clients with performance improvement, mergers & acquisitions (mainly financial due diligence), forensics, and disputes & litigation, among others.
To power its domestic ambitions, Alvarez & Marsal has over the past period onboarded over a dozen professionals to its three offices, including managing directors Nicholas Reid and Renee Klimczak, and senior directors John Sanger, Shaun Richardson and Daniel Hund.
Additionally, the firm is relocating senior professionals from across the firm’s footprint in 30+ countries to Australia to help build out in-demand capabilities and support the growing number of engagements.
Alvarez & Marsal currently focuses on clients in the natural resources, mining, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications and technology sectors. “We’re building a team that brings Alvarez & Marsal’s operational heritage and results driven mindset to clients in the Australian market,” said Marsal.
Elsewhere in South East Asia, Alvarez & Marsal recently launched new offices in Malaysia and Vietnam, and further afield, the firm over the summer opened up for business in Abu Dhabi and Saudia Arabia.
