PwC US has acquired Sagence, a Chicago-based data management and analytics consulting firm.

Founded in 2009, Sagence helps companies align data and business strategies, develop insight using data science, manage data change, build data platforms, and deploy emerging data technologies. The firm works with clients in financial services, insurance, higher education, and retail.

Sagence has 50 employees, according to LinkedIn.

PwC’s acquisition of Sagence will strengthen the data strategy and roadmapping offering within its analytics insights business.

The move is part of PwC’s efforts to expand its digital business, which is a key part of its five-year strategy “The New Equation.”

“At PwC, we strive to be the best digital business partner for our clients,” said Cenk Ozdemir, cloud and digital leader, PwC US. “We are committed to expanding our talent, capabilities, and technology in core areas critical to today’s business issues with cloud, digital, and data as top priority areas. Our acquisition of Sagence is a significant investment in our cloud capabilities, data strategy, and future growth.”

The Sagence deal follows several PwC US acquisitions in the cloud services area in the last 18 months. These include: EagleDream Technologies, a cloud transformation specialist focusing on AWS; Application Consulting Training Solutions, a Microsoft cloud services specialist; and Netrovert, an IT consultancy focusing on MuleSoft integrations.

“Delivering differentiated insights for clients has been critical to the success of the Sagence team,” said Alan Matsumura, partner, Sagence. “Together with the team of esteemed data and analytics professionals at PwC, we look forward to addressing clients' account planning demands head-on, backed by analytical and data depth, and strong cloud capabilities.”

Data consultancies have been a hot acquisition target for consulting firms as well as private equity. Data transformation is a high-growth, high-demand area, but with a particularly tight labor market for experienced data professionals, M&A represents the top way to scale up capabilities in a reasonable time frame.
