Business networking platform LinkedIn has named its top 25 companies in Australia for career progression, with only three established consulting firms making the list.

Now into its seventh local edition, the LinkedIn Top Companies rankings are compiled according to the platform’s extensive data on eight measures of career progression, including in areas such as skills growth, company stability, advancement opportunities, and gender diversity.

The rankings also track employee promotions within companies and departures, including overall attrition rates.

Over the years, consulting firms have historically performed well on LinkedIn’s list, although this year marks a notable slip in consulting sector representation (a possible reflection of a current downturn in client demand meaning that hiring appetite is down compared to twelve months previous).

In effect, that makes Nous Group’s listing – the latest in a string of workplace accolades – all the more meritorious. In addition to being named Australia’s very best company to work for in 2021 by independent human capital research firm WRK+, Nous has also received recent recognition for its inclusivity and as a top graduate employer. Of note, Nous’s last mid-year promotion round saw around one sixth of its global workforce being elevated.

Backing up on last year, multinational Indian IT services and consulting giant Tata Consultancy Services – which just reported $28 billion in global revenues amid the global economic slowdown – landed at 20th on the list, albeit recording a nine-spot slide. Like Nous Group, TCS has also been a feature on recent graduate employers lists, and last year launched a digital research and innovation hub in Sydney in partnership with Deakin University.

Deloitte also returns to the list three spots behind TCS, having been the most consistent performer among consultancies over the past three years, despite an eleven-spot drop from last year.

On the other side of the coin, IT infrastructure provider Kyndryl has made its debut at 15th in just its first year post-IBM. While the latter sought to sharpen its focus on artificial intelligence, cloud and consulting, Kyndryl also provides digital transformation consulting.

The other leaders

Outside of consulting, this year’s list has a reasonably familiar look, dominated by the banking and technology sectors, despite recent global hits to the latter. After the Big Four banks crowded the top five last year, Judo Bank this year emerged at the very top, followed by Commonwealth and National Australia Bank.

Amazon and Zendesk rounded out the top five, while Atlassian, ANZ, Alphabet and Dell all featured in the top dozen companies for career growth.

LinkedIn stated: “This year continues to bring waves of disruption in the labour market, from advancements in artificial intelligence to the rise of the “loud leaving” trend. Despite strong hiring numbers, economic uncertainty and news of layoffs persist, prompting many professionals to look for savvy career moves and employers to rethink how they attract, retain and develop talent. This list is filled with insights and resources for professionals at every level.”
