Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), a New York-headquartered management consultancy, has expanded its global transaction advisory group (TAG) into Canada with the hiring of Scott Foster as managing director and practice leader.
Based in Toronto, Foster has more than 20 years of experience leading buy-side and sell-side M&A projects for corporate and private equity clients, including providing financial, commercial, and operational due diligence services. Foster has advised on more than 200 transactions in the US and Canada, with particular expertise in the waste management and environmental services sectors.
He most recently spent over four years at KPMG Canada, where he was leader of the transaction services practice and built the commercial due diligence and strategy practice. Before that, he spent 16 years at Deloitte Canada, where he was latterly co-chair of the private equity practice, focusing on financial accounting, due diligence, and integration and separation services. He also previously served as M&A transaction services leader.
Foster has a bachelor’s degree in business from Western University.
“Scott’s Big 4 background, extensive transactional advisory experience, and results-oriented approach mirrors A&M’s operational heritage and global network of boots-on-the-ground professionals,” said Paul Aversano, global TAG leader at A&M.
The firm’s expansion of its transactions practice into Canada follows investments in Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Sweden. TAG has more than 800 professionals across 32 offices in the US, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific – making it the largest transaction advisory practice outside the Big Four.
“Clients are increasingly demanding an integrated, global due diligence model and deep sector expertise in areas such as healthcare, software & technology, financial services and consumer transactions,” Foster said. “Leveraging A&M’s global capabilities and the firm’s knowledge of local market conditions will give clients a competitive edge in the trenches, where deals get done.”
Alvarez & Marsal has more than 7,000 global employees providing advisory, business performance improvement, and turnaround consulting services.
The firm has Canadian offices in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.
“Transaction advisory services are a natural extension of A&M Canada’s Restructuring & Turnaround offering and related services, including Disputes and Investigations and Corporate Performance Improvement. As US and international funds increasingly search for more complex transactions across Canada, Scott’s local market knowledge will help clients solve for complex problems along with developing new avenues for maximizing value and driving change,” said Douglas McIntosh, managing director and head of A&M Canada.
