Australian engineering and advisory firm Aurecon has appointed Marcus Tong as Technical Director for Geotechnical in its Singapore office.

A civil engineer by background, Marcus Tong brings over two decades of experience in large-scale underground-related works to Aurecon, deepening the firm’s underground engineering and consulting expertise.

Throughout his career, Tong has been extensively involved in numerous major infrastructure projects including Singapore’s Cross Island Line, Thomson-East Coast Line, Downtown Line, Circle Line, Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, Changi Airport Inter-Terminals and Intra-Terminals (Megaspine) Tunnels.

Tong also worked on several projects across Asia, including in India (the Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro projects), and Hong Kong (the Shatin-Central Link Diamond Hill Station).

“Marcus also brings to Aurecon a distinctive skillset given his specialist experience in tunnel segmental lining design and mined tunnel design, especially in soft ground and under both normal and seismic conditions,” said Jean-Marc Girard, Chief Operations Officer for Asia at Aurecon.

In his new role, Tong will contribute to major Aurecon projects in the region, and be responsible for enhancing the firm’s underground engineering capabilities and offerings.

With limited land available, underground works is a major opportunity for Singapore the coming years, particularly in the area of infrastructure, transport and mobility. “Underground space holds immense potential to further optimise land use and provide capacity for future needs,” said Tong.
