Kimberly Johnston has joined PA Consulting as a Houston-based partner in the energy and utilities practice.

Johnston brings 30 years of tax and regulatory experience across the value chain of US regulated energy markets to PA, where she will become a member of the firm’s climate response unit. The unit works with industry clients on energy transition and meeting net-zero commitments.

Johnston spent the last five years as a partner at EY, where she served as US energy transition services leader and co-led transformative energy delivery initiatives and capital investment growth strategies in US regulated energy markets. Johnston advised clients including investor-owned electric and gas utilities, midstream energy companies, competitive wholesale generators, and retail energy providers, as well as regulators and municipalities.

Before that, she spent six years at utility firm CenterPoint Energy, where she was a corporate officer and VP of tax and played a central role in Texas competitive energy markets, regulatory strategies, legislative priorities, and natural disaster resilience measures.

Johnston was also previously a tax director at Spectra Energy, PwC, and EY. Earlier in her career, she was a tax manager at AIG and the US Department of the Treasury.

Johnston has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Utah.

“We are delighted to welcome Kimberly to the PA family,” Aris Karcanias, global head of energy and utilities at PA Consulting, said. “Her unique expertise in delivering decarbonization and resiliency oriented solutions through financial ingenuity, new market design, and technology innovation will help address the significant challenges created by climate change that our clients and cities across the US face.”

PA’s energy and utilities practice works on client projects in energy transition including helping US power company Vistra Energy develop the world’s biggest battery and advising Orsted, a Danish power company, on green energy transformation.

“At PA, tackling the climate crisis at speed is a major focus,” Johnston said. “I am thrilled to join a team of experts with a multi-disciplined strategy to unlock long term value creation for all stakeholders."
