IBM’s organisation in Egypt has hit a leadership milestone, seeing Marwa Abbas become the first woman to take the reins of the local practice since its founding over 60 years ago.
Over the past period, IBM’s operation in Egypt was led by Wael Abdosh, who recently was handed a promotion following his appointment as general manager for the Gulf region, the Levant and Pakistan. Stepping into his shoes is now 25-year company veteran Marwa Abbas, who notably becomes the inaugural woman to lead the technology and consulting giant in the country.
A graduate of the American University in Cairo, Abbas will be end-responsible for all aspects of IBM’s business, from commercial operations and business development to project delivery, internal operations, talent and innovation.
“Marwa is a highly respected executive who brings to the role strong market and industrial experience to deliver value to our clients with focus on areas like data, automation, security, and hybrid cloud, which are key elements of IBM’s growth strategy,” said Saad Touma, General Manager of IBM across the Middle East and Africa.
Abbas will hold the role alongside her position as leader of the Technology division. She previously held various other leadership roles at the US-headquartered company, including that of Head of IBM’s Digital Sales Center in Cairo.
Commenting on her new challenge, Abbas said: “I am very excited to lead the company in this pivotal period, to drive more strategic partnerships and alliances, and accelerate the digital transformation journey in Egypt, in line with the national agenda.”
“It is a great honour to be part of this journey by expanding the role of the company, helping our clients and partners in their growth path, as well as strengthening our role as a hub for dynamic and diversified skills serving our clients in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa.”
