Global consultancy Bain & Company has launched a new office in Vienna, the firm’s sixth location in the German-speaking DACH region.
The new office in Austria’s capital city is Bain & Company’s third new hub in Europe this year, having previously opened for business in Athens and Lisbon. The strategic consulting firm now has 22 offices across Europe, and 60+ worldwide.
“We have been serving Austrian clients for many years and the Vienna office allows our teams to be even closer to them,” said Franz Robert Klingan, Partner and Head of Bain & Company’s Austrian operation.
The new office has kickstarted with major ambitions. In the coming two years, the firm plans to build a practice of over 100 consultants – in order to be able to advise the firm’s corporate and private equity clients across all sectors on strategic and transformation topics.
Helping clients with their path to net-zero and environmental, social, governance (ESG) challenges is another of the key areas of focus for the Vienna operation. “Companies must make their business models more sustainable in order to remain future-proof,” said Klingan, a 20-year ‘Bainie’ who previously worked from the firm’s Boston and Munich offices.
“At Bain, we stand for an uncompromising focus on sustainable results. But this does not only apply to our customers. We also want to inspire our own employees,” added Bain & Company partner Marie-Therese Marek, who together with Klingan is responsible for realising the Austrian growth ambition.
“That’s why Bain created the Bain Sustainability Academy. The Academy provides science-based training to all our employees – regardless of job level – on the importance of sustainability and provides them with the skills and tools to help our clients deliver value.”
From Vienna to the world
One of the perks of life at Bain is that consultants can be based in a city such as Vienna (which is regarded as the world’s most liveable city) and work for international clients, or even be based internationally. “More than half of the Bain workforce currently works in an international environment,” explained Marek. “From Vienna, our consultants can work on client engagements across all corners of the world – whether it’s London, Singapore or Graz.”
Meanwhile, Bain also has a well-known office transfer scheme, which helps consultants relocate for a certain period of time (typically two years) to other offices to gain valuable new experiences.

Earlier this year strategy and management consultancy Oliver Wyman also launched an office in Vienna. Arch-rivals McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group have been around in Vienna for over a decade.
