Advisory giant Deloitte is set to admit 70 new partners in a further rebuilding of the firm following a tumultuous COVID-19 period, during which more than 100 partners departed and its CEO unexpectedly resigned.

Deloitte CEO Adam Powick says he “vividly remembers” the day he became a partner 18 years ago.

“Being promoted to partner is a truly significant career milestone, and I am really excited to welcome 70 diverse and talented individuals to the Deloitte partnership,” said Deloitte CEO Adam Powick.

Mr Powick became chief executive in April after former CEO Richard Deutsch surprised the firm and its leaders by suddenly resigning as chief executive on March 11.

About 44 per cent, or 31 of the 70 new partners, are women, increasing the proportion of female partners at the firm to 31 per cent, up slightly from about 30 per cent in 2019.

The 70 will officially become Deloitte partners on July 1, bringing the total partnership to 900.

Half of the new partners, 35, are in the firm’s consulting division, 12 are in audit and assurance, eight are in financial advisory, and the remaining 15 are spread between the firm’s risk advisory, taxation and legal and internal services divisions.

The 70 new partners, along with the 43 promoted in December and an additional 31 experienced hires, mean the firm will have brought on 144 new leaders in the year to July 2021.

The firm appointed almost 140 new partners and had about 880 partners as of July 1, 2019. Like other firms, partner promotions were disrupted in the 2020 financial year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I vividly remember a similar day for me 18 years ago and the emotions and excitement that come with an announcement like this,” Mr Powick said.

“I also clearly understand that promotions like these are no accidents and that they recognise sustained focus on client service, personal development and team building.”
