KPMG UK has been recognised among the top performers for social mobility, ranking second in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2021. This year’s position sees the firm climb from third to second place – the fifth consecutive year KPMG has ranked among the top-3 employers.

The Index, first created by the Social Mobility Foundation in 2017, ranks UK employers on the actions they take to ensure they are open to and progressing talent from all backgrounds. Employers were assessed and benchmarked across seven areas: their work with young people, routes into the employer, the attraction of staff, recruitment and selection, data collection, progression of staff and experienced hires and advocacy.

In September this year, KPMG UK became one of the first organisations to publish its socio-economic background pay gaps and also set out its social mobility action plan, which includes ambitious targets to increase the proportion of Partners and Directors from lower socio-economic backgrounds to 29% by 2030.

“KPMG UK has long championed greater social mobility. It’s not only the right thing to do – helping build a fairer and more equitable society - but it also leads to improved business performance. Greater diversity on all fronts brings with it fresh thinking, different perspectives and ultimately better outcomes for our business and our clients.

“From being the first business to publish comprehensive socio-economic background workforce data back in 2016, to recently reporting our socio-economic background pay gaps and setting ourselves ambitious targets, we’ve come a long way, but we must continue to challenge ourselves. It’s vital we remove the barriers facing those from lower socio-economic backgrounds and other historically under-represented groups. We don’t want socio-economic background, gender identity, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation to be a barrier to anyone’s career at our firm.”
