Shirley Machaba has become the first black African woman to be appointed chief executive of PwC Southern Africa, the Big Four firm has announced
She will replace Dion Shango on 1 July when he moves to take up his new post as CEO of PwC Africa.
Welcoming Machaba’s appointment, Shango said, “PwC believes Shirley has the leadership skills, experience and influence to lead PwC Southern Africa in the coming years. We believe Shirley is an excellent choice to lead our local firm, especially as the business continues to explore new areas of growth and development across Africa.”
Chartered accountant Machaba has more than 26 years’ experience of internal and external audit, risk management, compliance and governance. She has been a partner in PwC’s assurance services arm for more than 15 years.
She is currently PwC Africa’s governance, risk and internal audit leader and diversity and inclusion leader for PwC Southern Africa.
In 2016, she was made Audit Partner of the Year by the African Women Chartered Accountants. Last year she was named Big Four Professional of the Year at the South African Professional Services Awards, as well as the overall Woman Professional of the Year. She is also currently in the running to win the 2018 Business Woman of the Year BWA award, the result of which is due to be announced before the end of the year..
